Once again, Benalmádena Cablecar collaborates with Calamorro Skyrace 2025, held this Saturday 5th April in Benalmádena, with a fan zone for athletes, families and fans in our facilities. This year, the Calamorro Skyrace is the third race of the Merrell Skyrunning World Series, a discipline of mountain races characterised by very technical and complicated ascents and descents, as well as by its spectacular scenery.
Representing La Sportiva team, Patricia Pineda (Spain) won the women's category with a time of 3:01:51 and, with the Scarpa team, Luca del Pero (Italy) won the men's category with a time of 2:24:19, beating the previous record. The Andalusian athlete Patricia Pineda started strong at the beginning of the ascent to Mount Calamorro together with Iris Pessey, winner in the 2023 edition, and Denisa Dragomir, with whom she maintained a hand to hand until the last climb, finishing the race with Denisa Dragomir in third place and Elisa Desco in third position. For his part, the Italian runner Luca del Pero competed with the winner of the previous edition, Roberto DeLorenzi, who came second, and with the Andalusian Nicolás Molina, who came third.
This extreme mountain race has a distance of 25.7 km with 2,270 metres of positive elevation gain, standing out for being a short distance race, but with a great demand and little opportunity for rest for its participants. It has a steep slope and few flat stretches, confronting runners with extremely technical descents and ascents, reaching 742 metres above sea level on this occasion in the ascent to Mount Calamorro, compared to a ‘climb’ of over 650 metres of positive height gain over a stretch of 3.76 km.
The Benalmadena Alpine Group, organiser of the race since 2008, once again counted on the collaboration of Benalmádena Cablecar, which provided the organisation with 250 tickets at a 50% discount at its facilities that day so that family members, residents of Benalmádena and fans of this race could congregate and create a good sporting and festive atmosphere in the Fan Zone. Benalmadena residents were able to enjoy a half-price gondola ride to take in the stunning views of the coast and watch the world's skyrunning elite in action at the same time.
Skyrunning is the most technical, extreme and pure mountain running discipline due to the climbs and descents involved, with minimal flat sections, sometimes requiring the use of hands to negotiate steps. It also produces images of unquestionable beauty, as can be seen in the pictures.
